Landslide in Lyon County, Nevada.

Image
In January of 2023 there was a major landslide with rocks and boulders that has closed a highway. The highway is not expected to open for several months. Lyon county is just 1 hr southwest from where I live. The landslide is beleived to be caused by heavy precipitation. This winter the Sierra Nevada Mountains have had record amounts of snowfall. The terrain in the area including the mountains is low in vegeation to prevent the landslides. In the Lyon County landlside the debris flowed over a highway and has created major damage, but no one was hurt. There are many ways that the state helps to prevent landslides due to the terrain and the area is one of the highest in seismic acitivity in the country. Different things that can prevent the landslides is proper drainage, adjustin the angle of slopes, and protective structures such as nets. Here is a link to the article I found about the landslide: https://www.kolotv.com/2023/01/11/landslide-closes-portion-sr-208-lyon-county/ Here are a

Disaster at Slide Mountain

Image
Living in the high desert near the Sierra Nevada Mountains, it is one of the most mountainous regions in the country. One of those peaks is called Slide Peak due to the numerous amount of landslides that happen there each year. The area ranks one of the highest for seismic activiyt. On May 30, 1983 was one of the largest landslides that have occurred there which dozens of homes were ruined with many injuries and one fatality. In this area the peaks do not have much vegetation and have many rocks. In the winter prior to the diaster there was a lot of snow and rain which resulted in this massive landslide.

Creation and Science

Image
We have learned that the earth shows scientific evidence that it is billions of years old. I know that this is the Lord's world and created it after the direction of the Father. I have always been curious about how the teachings of the gospel support the physical evidence of science. And because this is His earth then everything in it is by Him. There are different concepts that I have learned in the gospel that could help make sense of the connection between religion/creation and science. The Savior created the earth in 6 days, it is possible that each "day" could have represented a much longer time period here on earth that would equal billions of years. In the scriptures and the explanation of what He created on each day does go along with the time periods and eras with mammals and humans coming last. This would allow the existence of dinosaurs, earlier organsims and rocks that have taken millions of years to create. My sister told me something very interesting relatin

Metamorphic Rocks Building Materials

Image
My husband is a tile contractor and he works with many different metamorphic materials. The main one he uses is marble, and quartzite. We are remodeling our kitchen and he is tiling the entire kitchen. Here I have shown a trim piece we are using that is marble. Marble is a metamorphic rock usually made of calcite crystals, quartz, pyrite, mica, and clays. Marble is usually white (calcite). Marble is porous and can stain or change color as time goes on. I don't like to use very much marble because it is porous, quartzite is also porous. The tile that we used to have in our entryway was slate which is a metamorphic rock can be made of shale and mudstone. Slate is formed by compression and appears to have layers. Here you can see our old fireplace made of slate. And here is the new marble stone we put on our fireplace.

Sedimentary Rocks

Image
Living in Reno, Nevada, I have a yard full of various types of sedimentary rocks. Here are a few of them with descriptions and explanations of how I identified them. I do have an app on my phone that can help me identify some that I don't know, but mostly I observed them and did research about characteristics of these very cool sedimentary rocks! It is clear that both types of rocks have been formed from different types of rocks and minerals. Many different types of rocks that can be found together and in layers. Limestone: This is probably what majority of the rocks in my yard are. How I identified it: Limestone texture, yellow, white, also gray color, calcite, I live near a limestone deposit. Shale: I have many of these in my yard. How Idenitfy them: soft and breaks apart easily, sheet layers, similar colors. The second photo is a broken up shale rock eroded by the environment. I can't use these in my landscape because in this high desert climate they almost always

Volcanic Eruptions

In May 1980, Mt. St. Helens in Washington State erupteed. Mt. St. Helens is 8,363 ft. Living just a few hours away from the mountain, my parents both remember the day the mountain erupted. My mom was 18 and a senior in highschool. She was living in central Oregon and ash sprinkled over the whole area for at least a week. My dad was 22 a return missionary living about two hours north of my mom, witnessed much more ash covering the area. A month or so later, they were married living near Portland Oregon, after a break from the ash, the ash seemed to start up again with a second round of ash covering windshields and floating around. Decades later they were able to tour the beautiful mountain, it is a good memory for them. When I was in my 20's living in Utah, I would fly home to visit. As I would arrive near Portland, I could see Mt. St. Helens from the airplane. Most people from my chilhood remember the day it erupted.
