Sedimentary Rocks
Living in Reno, Nevada, I have a yard full of various types of sedimentary
rocks. Here are a few of them with descriptions and explanations of how I
identified them. I do have an app on my phone that can help me identify some
that I don't know, but mostly I observed them and did research about
characteristics of these very cool sedimentary rocks!
It is clear that both types of rocks have been formed from different types of rocks and minerals. Many different types of rocks that can be found together and in layers.
Limestone: This is probably what majority of the rocks in my yard are. How I identified it: Limestone texture, yellow, white, also gray color, calcite, I live near a limestone deposit.
Shale: I have many of these in my yard. How Idenitfy them: soft and breaks apart easily, sheet layers, similar colors. The second photo is a broken up shale rock eroded by the environment. I can't use these in my landscape because in this high desert climate they almost always crumble apart. Shale is very common in this area.
